AKC Earthdog tests. Mainland judges are Kathi Ogawa and Jean Dieden, DVM. Both are from Washington state and have many years of experience with Earthdog events. Kathi is a border terrier owner and Jean has dachshunds and is one of the vets for the Iditarod races. Hold this date for the AKC test! There is a different test each day so if you don’t pass the first day, you have a chance to try again the next! All tests held in Waimanalo. Don’t be a spectator! Participate!!! Once the dog goes down the tunnel, there is nothing to see! Dogs must be AKC registered and of breed approved to participate by the AKC.
August 9 & 10
AKC Earthdog tests. Mainland judges are Ann Wendland and Mary Bayley from No. California. They have Parson, Russell, and Patterdale terriers. That’s right! You have 2 more opportunities to earn your dog’s AKC title!!! Different judges, more chances to pass!
August 10
Kini Hawaiian Earthdogs is pleased to sponsor an American Working Terrier Association (AWTA) hunting test! AWTA tests are the tests that the AKC Earthdog tests are based upon. Dogs need not be AKC registered to enter!!! Terrier and dachshund mixed breeds are also eligible to enter! Your dog could earn a Certificate of Gameness from the AWTA and really cool silver flask with the AWTA logo! Ann Wendland will be our judge for this event.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Earthdogs?
It is a test of hunting instinct designed for small terriers and dachshunds. www.duffyscavern.org is a great resource!
Why should my dog earn this type of title?
A well balanced dog has a title at BOTH ends of its name. A breed championship denotes that a dog is a good representation of its breed. An Earthdog title is a performance title. It denotes that this dog can do what it was bred to do.
My dog is not AKC registered. Can he still participate?
Non-AKC registered dogs and dachshund/terrier mixes will be allowed to participate in Fun Days and AWTA test only. If your dog is a pure breed go to www.akc.org for registration information. If you need additional help obtaining AKC registration, please contact
I tried coming to a fun day but my dog won’t perform. What can I do?
COME AGAIN!!! It is common for dogs to need several outings to get the hang of working. Maybe your dog was too young when you brought him out the first time. All our members are always learning new ways to bring the hunting instinct out in dogs. We bring in judges from all over the United States and are constantly learning new training techniques. Give us another try and give your dog another chance!
I have a Jack Russell terrier and I’m confused about AKC registration. Can you help me?
The AKC has now recognized 2 types of terriers, the Parson Russell Terriers and Russell Terriers. The Parson has longer legs and can be shown in ALL AKC events. The Russell Terrier is shorter legged and can be shown in AKC companion dog AND Earthdog events. If your dog has a foreign registration, you may go to www.akc.org for foreign registration forms. If you have reason to believe your dog is pure breed but do not have registration papers go to www.akc.org and look up PAL/ILP registration. If you need help with registration, contact
What is a PAL?
PAL/ILP stands for Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privileges. If your dog lacks any type of registration papers and you believe your dog to be pure breed, you may apply for an PAL/ILP number for your dog from the AKC. This will allow your to dog to participate in AKC companion dog and performance events. You may go to http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm for more information.
